Ethan Silverman is one of the fourth-generation employees at General Pipe Cleaners. Ethan has been at the company for seven years and is currently the director of sales operations. General Pipe Cleaners spoke with Ethan to learn more about working at his family-run business and what being a fourth-generation employee means to him.
As a fourth-generation employee at General Pipe Cleaners, what does it mean to you to be part of a family legacy?
Working in the family business brings pride and positive pressure to continue improving the quality and growth of our product line.
What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned from the previous generations that you apply in your role?
It is crucial not to stagnate and to always look for ways to improve, whether that is with our products or our processes.
How has the family dynamic influenced the culture and operations at General Pipe Cleaners across the generations?
We are not just a fourth-generation, family-owned business, but a fourth-generation factory as well. We care about our employees, and they clearly see that by wanting their own family members to join our General Pipe Cleaners family generation after generation.
How has working in a family-owned business shaped your personal and professional growth?
When I was growing up, I worked in our factory during the summers. That really showed me how important it is to know the details of a job before taking on a leadership role. Being hands-on helped me understand the challenges our factory employees face, and it made me appreciate their work more. I think that experience has shaped how I lead.
What do you find most rewarding about being part of General Pipe Cleaners, and what motivates you to continue the family tradition?
The many hats that are required to be worn working here is certainly an experience I would not have elsewhere. What motivates me is continuing to grow our company so there is an option for there to be conversations of a fifth generation to join if they want.
What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?
Our navigation as a US manufacturer during COVID-19 and how we developed on-the-fly processes to keep our doors open and our customers satisfied with our product.
What’s a hobby or interest you have?
Watching football, long walks while listening to an audiobook, hosting dinners with my wife and friends, and various city league sports.
Do you have a funny or memorable story about working with family members that you can share?
When working a tradeshow in Indianapolis with my cousin Korey, we traveled up a few days before to stop by and visit our old alma mater Indiana University. It would have been a much better idea to plan for that visit post-tradeshow!
