- How are plumbing contractors leveraging data and analytics to optimize their drain cleaning and inspection processes?
There is a huge amount of variation regarding utilizing data and analytics in service plumbing. Some companies are totally committed to the idea, and others are still using a paper-based system. As you would expect, it is the larger firms that usually commit to analytics first. It’s been my experience that commercial plumbing companies are ahead of the curve, and service plumbers are less so. I think the next five years or so will change this situation because of anticipated technological advances in pipe inspection and location, such as AI-assisted GPS mapping. When these new technologies hit the market, it will make it easier for even small service companies to integrate data and analytics into their day-to-day practices.

Several years ago, I was talking to a plumbing contractor at a trade show, and he confessed to me that he had just spent approximately $30K to fix his fleet of three pipe inspection units. However, he said that he was happy to invest in the repairs because each one of the units had made him over $50K the year before. It was at that moment that I realized that I was at the wrong end of this business, and I asked him to elaborate. He told me how he used his drain cleaning business as a lead generation system for his pipe replacement/pipe relining business. It turns out that one or two drain cleaning jobs out of every ten give him an opportunity to sell a pipe replacement job, which can cost as much as $30K each. In an average year, he will pitch and close enough pipe replacement jobs to pay for his ‘top of the line’ camera systems many times over. And although this contractor is on the high end of the drain cleaning income curve, he is not unique. I have gotten in the habit of asking contractors how long it took them to pay off their snakes, jetters, flexible shaft devices and cameras. Often the answer is one day or one week!
